Two Paige Colors You Just Can't Pass Up!

Eagle River and Tuscan... such romantic names that are absolutely fitting for such romantic dark washes.

Eagle River is another absolutely beautiful dark wash produced by Paige. It was just introduced, and is the teal twin to the coveted Tuscan wash, which was out last year The Tuscan has a more indigo hue with a more abrasive and silvery-gold undertone. The Eagle River is a soft deep steel blue with some teal and gold undertones. These are both washes that denim designers dream about creating!

Here is a description per Paige's site of these 2 washes:
Eagle River
Looks like: A deep, rich indigo with velvety highs and lows accented by subtle 3D whiskers. Fits like: True to size off the rack, it has very little give to be slimming and supportive; it will only give slightly after wear.
Tuscan
Looks like: A faded dark blue with a subtle golden undertone, velvety highs and lows, and light whiskers. Fits like: Tight off the rack and will only give slightly through wear to form to your natural body.

I own both and they are truly some of the best jeans I've ever owned! The color is amazing and they hold their shape exceptionally well throughout the day and even on through the week. This is especially good news if you are worried about washing your jeans too many times and wearing them thin and risking fading!

True Religion has changed things up!

Many times when designers change the look or toss up the design of their jeans a bit, they don't just stop there. With the world of designer denim as fast and competitive as it is, designers are under the stark notion that they must totally re-make and re-invent themselves every few years. Atleast, that has been the general trend since designer jeans hit the lime light at the turn of this century.

True Religion (and 7 for all Mankind and Rock and Republic) has recently re-invented themselves, with all new pocket designs, washes, hardware and tags to boot. This is not only to create revived interest, but also to battle the counterfeits and keep them on their toes. However, they have also changed their fit model, which essentially has changed the way the jeans are made and how they fit. This is a huge bummer for those who relied on and loved the old fit, and perhaps a great relief to those it hadn't worked for in the past.

True Religion has also re-invented some of its proportions on the jeans (unfortunately!). The waist is generally larger than its older counterpart, and the thighs have been taken in a bit. For me, this was largely disappointing, as when I looked in the mirror I frankly resembled a blossomed tulip. For my body type, it gapped at the waist and squeezed my thighs. Funny enough, it seems to be doing this to the model in the pic above as well! Needless to say, I will be snatching up a few extra old pairs before they are gone. Hopefully True Religion will find a different fit model in a few years and be back on track ;)

True Religion Ignores Wall Street

Run! True Religion Apparel (Nasdaq: TRLG) is under alien invasion! A bunch of internationally respected designers and big-name executives are taking over the high-end jean peddler -- and the market doesn't like it one bit.

Last Friday, the company hired a new CFO, a top name with a recent high-level history at respectable and large-scale operations like Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN) and Albertson's. It was a forward-looking hire, and part of sweeping changes in True Religion's executive and design teams. So of course an analyst noted that these changes might hurt short-term performance, and the stock took a severe beating that day.

It's just another data point that shows how short-term concerns often mask the long-term best interests of any given company, and particularly smaller ones like True Religion. Forget the future -- trade in the here and now!

That is, of course, baloney. The rich margins on display in last night's earnings report showed that True Religion can afford to pay for top talent, while total inventories are actually shrinking, so there's no huge stockpile of unsold Lone Star skirts or Medium Thunder Kiss stretch jeans, gathering dust in a warehouse outside Los Angeles.

It's a very good idea to distance True Religion from its somewhat shady past, and to bring in the kind of executive team that can take this company to the next level. Today, it's not much more than a day trader's plaything, jumping and jerking at the slightest provocation -- good or bad.

This week, the transformation continued, with CEO Jeffrey Lubell's wife Kimberly leaving the top design post, a move that was announced on the same day as the rather stable earnings report. These guys are trying hard to look like a contender, and stubbornly moving forward with its recasting despite Wall Street's skepticism. Good on you, mates.

You don't have to earn analyst respect to succeed. In fact, keep doing what you're doing; ignore Wall Street as best you can and focus on setting up for future success. I, for one, welcome our new denim overlords. Set up right over there, right next to one of your competitors, Guess? (NYSE: GES).

The Winter Blues....

Wide and Classy

Last year, it may have been all about skinny, but this year the fashion industry is all over anything that is wide. Don't get me wrong, skinny is still 'in', but THE look for this fall and winter (and probably next spring) is going to be high and wide. Almost like a classy 70's-esque style.

Speaking of the 70's, they are actually going to be doing super-flare jeans once again, which will probably start appearing on the shelves in spring. I am not so sure I personally like a skinny jean (which makes me look like a corgie dog) or a super flare (which just makes me look like I am all-knees and no leg).

BUT, the classy wide-leg style many designers are creating right now can be flattering for a LOT of people! And I, for one, am so excited that it happens to be in-style this year so I can snag a few pairs. Wide legs work well for many body types because they do a wonderful job of hiding any 'problems areas' while truly lengthening the leg quite a bit. They also do a wonderful job of balancing the body with their ability to create such a clean straight line from the hips down.

What is a 'classy' wide leg? Generally speaking, they are jeans (or pants) that have very clean and smooth lines with minimal fading and destruction. They will appear to almost be work pants, but with a little more pizazz.

There are quite a variety of wide-leg designer jeans to choose from. Citizens makes many very cute wideleg trousers, and Seven for All Mankind took their 'Dojo' wide-leg style a step further and created the 'Ginger', which is a super wide-leg with a higher rise (reminescent of the Marilyn Monroe, eary Hollywood Glamour, which is very much in style right now too). Joe's Jeans also have a lovely selection of high rise wide leg jeans, and even Diesel has a few pair.

If you really want to rock some ultimate wide-leg jeans, try out the Ginger (which I find very flattering on most people I've seen). They come in a variety of nice colors like London and Jamaica (both a grey-ish medium blue), Mercer (a raw dark color w/ some sheen) and Tahiti (a beautiful soft medium blue). They may be 'trendy', but wide-leg atleast is actually flattering and stylish, so it will never completely be out of style! It's Not Easy Being Green (and Blue)

In the following days, I want to direct my focus to some of the lesser known, but highly commendable lines of designer jeans out there, that have environmental causes.

I wasn't truly concerned or aware of just how much our purchases can harm or benefit our world until I began to research a bit. Now I am a big advocate of keeping the environment as close to its natural state as possible. What do I mean by this? I mean that I believe there is a way for us to co-exist peacefully with salmon. OK, sorry, that's what Bush likes to say. But, environmentally speaking, it actually makes sense. I could go off on talking about organic and environmental issues, another one of my passions besides jeans, but I will cut to the chase here.

What I believe is that there is a way (and should be) for us to exist and use our natural resources, environment, and animals in a natural and humane way, that keeps the world balanced and constantly renewed and restored. With all the chemicals, hormones, pesticides, and drugs we certainly are trying to cover up and fix a lot of things the backwards way. Instead, some companies now are choosing to be responsible, and use methods that do not harm the environment (or the consumer down the line).

'Organic' is a very touchy term to use for labeling things, since the word is actually very loosely regulated, and does not technically imply that the methods used are completely natural or sustainable. The latter of those two words being of most concern. Sustainable organic is the true definition of organic (or what it used to be, a few decades ago, before large companies stepped into the organic arena).
The great news is there are now some options for those of you like me, who are concerned about being a responsible shopper, and buying things that benefit the environment and the people making your clothes.

These lines range from being 'green' (environmentally friendly) to organic (a little more responsible) to sustainable organic (completely responsible). I will be highlighting each one for the next few days; mentioning what's great, not so great about them, their story, and where to find them! The following companies I plan to highlight include Loomstate, Edun, Nudie, Kuyichi, Pine IV and Tierra del Forte.

Brown Label: Simple Name, Extraordinary Jean

I happened upon this line of jeans a little over a year ago in a small boutique, tried them on, and have not been able to get them out of my mind since! This is one brand that definitely deserves more attention!

Brown Label came quietly onto the scene in October of 2004. If you haven't already seen these in person, this brand has one of the most definitive and unique pocket shapes out there. What is even better is that they actually look suprisingly flattering on.

Canadian native Jason Verhoeven and his wife after 18 years in the fasion industry have realized their dream of creating their own line of clothing. The brand name, Brown Label, has such a simple ring to it, but these jeans are anything but simple. Verhoeven says he packed these jeans full of culture, lifestyle and class. Fusing innovative design with the intent to capture the insterest of consumers around the globe, this line has a taste all of its own. Personally, I am not sure by just looking at them, what cultures are being fused together, but they are certainly unique and beautiful.

As I mentioned before, the pockets have a very distinctive shape that is intricately designed and shaped to boost the derriere. The signature “B” is strategically placed to draw the eye to the center of the pocket (instead of the outside) which projects a sleeker appearance. This was personally my favorite part about the jean (pockets usually make or break the deal for me). They gave my rear a wonderful boost and were very well placed, neither being too high or too low.

Brown Label always seems to me like a wonderfully ironic name for these very chic and intricate jeans, but perhaps that's what they were aiming for... simple-chic!

I can picture the CEO cruising home on some L.A. highway to their posh pad on a hill sprinkled with palm trees overlooking the glittering city lights for one scenario. It's nice that all of us denim-lovers have made some of these companies wealthy beyond their own dreams, but wouldn't it be nicer if some of that money helped people in need?

Thats what Designer Kristopher Enuke thought when he contrived the line of jeans called Oligo Tissew. Born in Nigeria, raised in England, and then continueing his education in L.A., Enuke cultivated quite an eclectic background.

Never forgetting his roots, Enuke desired to create a jean with high attention to detail and understated sex appeal. Oligo Tissew (which he coined to mean 'refined cloth') was born. For every purchase of a pair of these jeans, a portion of the sale goes to funding and supporting schools in his hometown in Nigeria. Each jean has a star on one pocket, signifying the future possibilities of the children in Nigeria, and a ribbon on the other signifying our need to remember those children who are suffering and struggling as well.

What a refreshing twist for a pair of high-priced designer jeans, eh? Not to mention, they have a great curvy yoke that gives your derriere a nice lift, and fabric that is both beautiful and the comfort level is out of this world (and this is from personal experience)! These can be tricky to find, but they are worth it (every penny!)!! This is one pair of designer jeans that you can feel good about spending your money on!

Fortune Denim is a new, up-and-coming denim brand that is blazing its path through the celebrity list already. With its sleek style, imperial satin lining, and individual fortunes this brand has made a mark and might, just might make it a little further than most designer jean labels springing up left and right these days.

Everyone is trying to come up with something new and creative to stand out amongst the crowd. Fortune is no exception. I love the idea of sewing an individual fortune into each jean. After all, who doesn't like to open a fortune cookie and see what it has to say? Let's just hope the pair you end up keeping has a fortune you can deal with! And I am really liking the idea of having the inside of my jeans lined in satin; goodbye abrasive waistbands and bunched up pockets! They boast that the lining comes in a few different shades representing the Tang Dynasty. Did I mention the buttons come with 24 hand-set delicate swarovski crystals that resemble a special ancient Chinese coin? The subtle but metallic and slightly abstract floral design on the back pockets gives them just enough femininity and just enough flare.

The downside? These baby's are pricey. And not likely to be easy to find for any discount unless you live in L.A. or N.Y. I have no idea how they fit, or what body shapes they will most likely flatter, but I am itching to find out! Hopefully I can snag a pair sometime in the future, if I am so fortunate!

Brand Spotlight: Rock and Republic

What is it about Rock and Republic? It certainly can't be the $200+ price tag that keeps people coming back for more, or the yards of fabric one has to cut off if you are less than super-model height. What is it then?

For years I have been fascinated and obsessed with denim, but this one thing I have to admit: I was never a big fan of R&R. In fact, I found the brand quite bizarre and tacky in many respects and could not understand why people could love it, even adore it. And I certainly couldn't understand some of those that I know that worship it to the point of owning hundreds. But if this brand really is so popular and so great, I must be judging too quickly, I must be missing something. So I decided it was time to enlighten myself and go on a hunt for what makes this brand tick.

In retrospect, I can now say that the many great things about this brand I simply over-looked. There is no secret or divine truth in these jeans, but I did finally find out what is so great about R&R (and gained a new appreciation for it as well!). First off, the washes are absolutely gorgeous. There is probably not another brand out there that does it quite like Rock and Republic. If you are looking for a wash that says "I'm stunning", than look no further. They are unique, incredible, and both very fun and very sexy. This is what I see as their absolute strongest point of their brand.

Then there is the fabric- it is incredibly soft and supple and thin, almost like a pair of your favorite PJ's. For me, this tends to not be a good thing because I like denim with a more supportive and prominent feel. However, if my body shape were right for R&R's, I'd jump right into a pair of these comfy jeans!

Lastly, I found that an "R" just looks good on a butt. Period. There are some shapes and letters that do not, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why 7 for all Mankind put an "A" on one of their pocket styles. It is not a what I would call the most ingenious of choices, but it still works. The "H" on Citizens of Humanity barely squeaks by as looking OK and somewhat aesthetic. However, the way the "R" on Rock and Republic is constructed with its stiletto-like heel and sexy curve that throws itself outward, hugging the curves of your derriere, definitely is a winner as far as letters go. Again, I am not one to like big letters or logos slapped on my rear, but for those who don't mind, Rock and Republic definitely pulled it off.

Some other great things to note about this brand is the variety of cuts, rises and fits, as well as different style pockets (for people like me) who prefer designs like the phoenix, scorpion, fleur and crowns instead of the R's.

Rock and Republic just may find its way into my closet yet. I think I may try to hunt down some beautiful Fleur De Lis jeans, because I love how that shape actually works for the rear (also has some fun ties to The Da Vinci Code). For those of you wondering if Rock and Republic would be a good choice for you, I would define the fit of them in general as tight-thigh, low rise, high and small pockets, with a wide waist. These jeans look best on petite girls and women (and men) and typically best on those with petite derrieres to boot (pun intended).

Ever wonder how jeans are made??

Most of us assume that our jeans, whether from the Gap or from Rock and Republic, involve some kind of factory process. Pictures come to mind of the good ol' assembly line with jean after jeans passing through. But just what does go on at these factories and what processes are required in order to make a pair of jeans?

First, a pattern of about 15 pieces of the jean is drawn and supplied to the manufacturer. Once in the manufacturer's hands, a computer will digitally compute the best way to puzzle the pieces together on a piece of denim fabric in order to waste the least amount of fabric.

A large paper with this jig-saw of jean piece patterns will then be laid on top of large sheets of denim fabric, typically 100-300 or so sheets stacked at a time.

With large and heavy weights to hold the pattern on top of the piles of fabric, they will then proceed to slice through all the layers making 100's of each pattern piece at once with a textile cutting machine. This is why sometimes the very same jean can fit slightly different from another jean, because the cutting machine can slightly stretch as it pulls downward through the pile cutting.

Each piece is then marked it's specific size with chalk and gathered together into size groups. These are then taken to the manufacturers sewing machines, where workers sew (or feed into machines) each piece of jean together as quickly and carefully as possible.

Not quite done yet, now the assembled jeans are taken to a gigantic industrial
washing machine where the desired wash effect is produced. Pumice rocks are most typical for this process to create the 'stonewash' effect. Other chemicals or acids are used at this time as well for other wash effects. After this, a jean may be further destroyed by hand grinders, sanders and the like to add additional and strategical placements of fading and abrasions (such as whiskerings).

After all this, the jeans are carefully inspected numerous times by being passed down an assembly line of workers looking for any faults.

Now, the buttons and rivets are added with a machine press, and then the jeans are sent for final inspection and tags and labels are added (such as hang tags, joker tickets, pocket flashers, leg stickers, inside care labels and assorted product id tags).

Only after all of this the jeans can be bagged and packaged, ready for shipment to their many destinations, including your doorstep!

Fun Facts at a Glance:

•It takes approximately 15 pieces to make a standard pair of jeans
•It takes about 5.2 feet of denim fabric, 600+ feet of sewing thread, 6 rivets, 1-5 buttons (5 for button fly), 4 labels and optionally a zipper to make a pair of jeans.
•On average jean factories can make about 2,500 pair of jeans per day.
•On average, it will take about 15 minutes and 12 steps to make one pair of jeans
•A stonewash for 150 pairs of jeans takes 330 pounds of pumice stone and more than 200 gallons of water!
•Jeans are washed somewhere between 30 minutes and 6 HOURS

What's in a Yoke?

No, I'm not talking about those things oxen wear to plow the fields or pull your wagon to Oregon, or the center of your yummy sunny-side up on your breakfast plate. This is the v-line at the back of your jeans. The one no one really talks about or is quite sure what it's function is. In fact, even Google wasn't so certain when I asked it.

So what is the yoke there for? Its main function is to aid in proper assembly of the leg area to the waist area. Picture it as you would a doll, it is seperated into many parts to allow for better movement and appearance. The yoke allows for the waist to have its chosen 'contour', ie tighter or wider at the waist. Without the yoke, it is much more difficult to make a pair of jeans that will not bunch or scrunch in odd areas (but it is still done from time to time, especially for trouser style pants and jeans).

Aside from the technical aspects, a yoke can have a very appealing and aesthetic effect for your derriere. Picture now an empire dress, which has a line just below the bust, seperating it from the length of your torso. This has a very flattering and 'lifting' effect. This is essentially what is going on back there on the yoke! The yoke's shape (a nice u or v) will help make your rear more balanced and perky due to the lines adding seperation as well as vectors that draw your eye upwards. This is why you will always hear people suggesting to look for jeans with a yoke, and avoid one's that don't have one (since they make your rear look bigger and less toned).

What about those funky yokes like the Farmer designer brand jeans for instance? These still have the same ability to add balance and perkiness, because the yoke still draws your eye upwards. Sometimes jeans have different shape yokes that can make your hips, waist, or rear seem wider. Other times it can make your rear seem flatter or rounder. Yokes that are placed closer to the waist (higher on the rear) will naturally make your rear look higher, as long as the pockets are placed well. Yokes that are lower on the rear, being closer to 'center' in the back will have a very balancing effect. Some of the largest yokes I've seen are on True Religion's Big (and Super) T Sammy's. They are so big and center that there is honestly no need for pockets, but they are there anyways, and still look great on!

When you are buying trousers, it is more recommended to find trousers with yokes than without. Sometimes you can get the 'hanging off your rear' look instead of a well fitted pant without a yoke. If there's none in sight, atleast aim for pockets that substitute for the vector lines that yokes create (ie, pockets that are horizontal lines, and closer to the center of the rear if possible).

The yoke shape and size also allows designers to play with perceptual illusions that, if used correctly, can actually enhance your derriere! Take a look at the model below to better understand what each yoke shape and size does best.

Inverted Arc: Gives the illusion of a fuller rear.

Straight (Horizontal): This yoke line will make your waist appear wider. I wouldn’t recommend it if you wish to emphasize curves

“V” Shape: Most widely used and most flattering back yoke cut.

Sweet Heart: This yoke type can truly enhance a small derrière, as the cut is clearly outlining a curvy heart shape. It works very well with stretch tight jeans since it allows the pants to conform to your figure.

Extra Wide: This cut is used to achieve the “falling pants” look. The illusion is enhanced by the placement of the pockets way below the but. This look is great for some guys, though not very flattering to any woman’s figure. It beats having the pants actually falling, and certainly makes a point: illusions work!

No Yoke: Of course, this option exists, and is usually combined with seamed pockets. The garment is contoured by the use of darts. This look is very conservative, and with a proper fit can work very well for women with large rear ends.

Ever felt that way about checking out? Your heart starts racing and you wonder if you're money will be tossed into the deep black hole of the Internet, or if your purchase will ever find its way from your mouse to your doorstep.

I have been a member on eBay for exactly 4 years now. It's funny to think that in those 4 years, my shopping habits have changed completely because of it. As I look through my house, my closet, even my car...I find traces everywhere of things I've bought online. I wasn't always so at ease about shopping online though.

Can you remember the days when no one had a cell phone? Perhaps you may be too young to remember. But the fact is, we went from not needing it at all, to absolutely breaking down and having a heart attack when we are without one. That is basically how my personal experience with online shopping evolved.

How could I ever afford a pair of nice designer jeans, or even a couple pairs of small chain store jeans like Abercrombie or American Eagle without the Internet? The answer is I couldn't. But my closet is full of designer jeans, boots, jackets...come to think of it, about 90% of my closet arrived in a USPS package from a click of my mouse. Incredible? I have to say yes.

The Internet can be a little daunting to say the least. Most of my family and friends still do not take advantage of discount online shopping. Sure its fun (and safe) to go shopping at an actual mall or store, but I think it's more fun to save money. Nowadays I go window shopping and then pick up my items on Amazon or eBay for much less cost. Couldn't ask for more!

One of my favorite 'eBay stories' is when I broke a special soap dish my mother gave me when I was 6, many long years ago (I won't say how many), BUT, guess what? Someone was selling it on eBay! The wonderful thing about online shopping is that there is no 'geographical disadvantage'. There may not be a Saks off 5th where I live, but there it is on my computer screen, and that is the wondrous thing about online shopping.

Maybe you haven't given online shopping much of a chance. My mother still warns me to this day about scams taking your bank accounts and all your money. Trust and the Internet are still two words that seldom go hand in hand. However, if you use it in the right way and do a little research there is nothing to worry about. I have lost money on eBay, but I have learned, and now I am here to pass along that knowledge so that your Internet shopping can be as painless and joyful as possible! All my links to the side of each blog contain all trustworthy denim sellers on eBay. I will soon be adding the trustworthy online stores as well (apart from eBay)! So sit back and find yourself some deals!!

There's the 'pear', the 'apple' the 'square'. And then there's the curvy and the boy-ish figure, the short and the tall, the thin, the athletic. After looking at many guides I have come to one simple realization. None of us fit into just one of these standards. Or two. Maybe three at the least. What is most frustrating is that many guides will assume that if you have a certain 'shape' your height and everything else will be a certain way- and this is just not so. That is why I am formulating a new guide that should be more helpful for targeting every need in a clear and comprehensive manner!

This ultra-condensed guide will finally allow you to find your VARIOUS body 'types' and 'issues', and actually find out exactly what will work best for you! No more guessing! :)

I will be posting one section a day until it is all posted!

Bottom Heavy

This is actually something a well-designed jean can help with! After all, designer jeans are all about creating more balance!

•Pockets: Avoid very large or tiny pockets, average size is best! And look for pockets that are well centered, neither too high, low, narrow or wide apart.

•Cut: Sleek and simple designs will definitely do you good (avoid extra frills, details and pocket material such as flaps). Also, straight, cigarette, and skinny legs are typically very unflattering for this body type because it will make you appear as an inverted triangle. Stick with flared boot-cut jeans or a nice wide leg/trouser cut that fits snuggly at the rear and thigh, and has a sleek, straight line from the thigh to the floor. 7 for all Mankind Dojo’s work great for this (or something similar), but careful of the large trouser-hems, which can create a shorter-looking leg if you are already short.

•Rise: You will want to be looking for a mid-rise (not too high or too low). This will give you comfortable rear coverage but it won’t accentuate the area either.

•Wash: This is where a dark wash can really come in handy. Dark colors will flatter and bring proportion very nicely.

•Stretch or Rigid?: Both work very well! But be sure to check your other areas of concern on this list to see what may be best for you.

Top Heavy

Try finding jeans that ‘attract’ the eye away from your top is your best bet!

•Pockets: Pockets with detailing, flap pockets and the like work well, especially if you have a small or flat rear.

•Cut: Most often, those that are top-heavy by definition are not bottom-heavy, so adding extra design and material from the waist down will really help add balance. Also, try to stay away from straight and skinny jeans, which can throw the body off-balance and accentuate a larger top.

•Rise: Not particularly applicable to this particular area, it is dependent on other issues. Check your other areas of concern on this list to see what may be best for you.

•Wash: Medium and light-colored jeans will also work well for you (but you can make dark work as well- be careful of jeans that are dark, ultra sleek and simple, though, which will not do their job of pulling the eye downwards or balancing your body shape, unless you wear a dark top with them).

•Stretch or Rigid?: Both work very well! But be sure to check your other areas of concern on this list to see what may be best for you.

Short Torso

Aside from wearing long tops or low-slung belts there are actually ways in which jeans can help lengthen your torso too!

•Pockets: Slightly lower placed pockets can help slightly to make it appear as though your torso is meeting your legs slightly lower down than it actually is.

•Cut: Not applicable to this particular area, it is dependent on other issues. Check your other areas of concern on this list to see what may be best for you.

•Rise: This is the most important factor! Jeans which are low rise or super-low rise will help stretch and elongate your torso, and give more balance. To avoid jeans that give a constant ‘peep-show’ every time you sit down, try a contoured waistband that is low in the front and higher in the back (Grass Jeans make an amazing contour waist jean).

•Wash: Not applicable to this particular area, it is dependent on other issues. Check your other areas of concern on this list to see what may be best for you.

•Stretch or Rigid?: Both work well, stretch can sometimes make for a more comfortable low or super low rise than rigid can though (allows you to sit easier).

Long Torso

Wearing belts around the waist (and not hips)and sweaters with belt ties are very flattering, as are tailored tops that come in at the waist. But what can jeans do to shorten your torso??

•Pockets: Pockets that are center or slightly high will bring the length of your legs up higher to meet your torso, creating more balance. Avoid low or very low placed pockets.

•Cut: Not applicable to this particular area, it is dependent on other issues. Check your other areas of concern on this list to see what may be best for you.

•Rise: This is the most important factor! Mid-rise (not high, or low) is best. It will really help to balance and accentuate a nice proportion to your overall shape and appearance. Jeans with studded, embroidered, or otherwise eye-catching waistbands are also great for this body (be sure your tops don’t hide too much of the nice mid-rise or fancy waistbands!).

•Wash: Not applicable to this particular area, it is dependent on other issues. Check your other areas of concern on this list to see what may be best for you.

•Stretch or Rigid?: Both work very well! But be sure to check your other areas of concern on this list to see what may be best for you.

I know. This is definitely your next question. We all read guides, and what we are supposed to wear, but where do we go from there? What brand makes the actual jeans you are trying to find? Where do we find them? Well that and more will be answered (and added) to my fit guide as soon as it's all posted, so stay tuned!!

And you better bet you'll see advice for brand stuff daily in this blog as well! My fascination with denim has all to do with how the brand FITS... this is the #1 most important aspect of a jean on my list. Some people feel that the wash is, or that the brand (logo on pocket) is. Not so for me- I love a great fitting jean whether its $2 or $200!

After looking at many guides I have come to one simple realization. None of us fit into just one of these standards. Or two. Maybe three at the least. What is most frustrating is that many guides will assume that if you have a certain 'shape' your height and everything else will be a certain way- and this is just not so. That is why I am formulating a new guide that should be more helpful for targeting every need in a clear and comprehensive manner!

Short Legs

There are many creative and ingenious designs to help elongate a body in the world of denim. Generally, ‘short’ is considered 5’4” and under. A good brand of designer jeans will always pay attention to details to elongate.

•Pockets: Avoid pockets which start very low (such as on the leg, and end just on the bottom of your rear, this will shorten the leg). Always look for pockets that end just slightly below or right at the start of the bottom of your rear.

•Cut:One such detail is a leg that has a nice cut and flowing line to it. This means it will break nicely at the knee to continue a nice line from the hips to the floor. Boot-cut and slightly flared boot-cut jeans are the most universally flattering line. Straight jeans or a smaller boot-cut can also be nice, if you are not too short or too wide-hipped. Too much fabric at the bottom (such as flare, a wide trouser-like hem, or un-hemmed jeans that drag) all create an abrupt stopping point, drawing the eyes to the shortness of the leg. Also, look for a jeans with small, simple hems (so as not to draw the eye to them). This will add to the effect of a continuous line that ‘disappears’ into the ground. Some brands even add a faint vertical line on the leg to add some more illusion of height (such as Paige). On a side note, but important as well, make SURE your capris end JUST below your knee, not any further down.

•Rise: If you want to elongate your legs, look for a mid-rise jean (a super low rise means your legs will appear to start even lower).

•Wash: any wash is fine, it is not very applicable to this particular area, it is dependent on other issues. Check your other areas of concern on this list to see what may be best for you.

The Athlete Issue

You may have a well-toned body, but you are looking to minimize the size of thighs or calves under your jeans. All of us experience thigh-tight jeans at some point, and it transforms your legs into a pre-packeged denim sausage waiting for a bun and some mustard to go on top. But, this problem is absolutely fixable!

•Pockets: Find pockets that sit rather center, ending just where the butt begins or just below it, but never too low or too high. This also will help create balance.

•Cut: Minimizing can actually be accomplished by finding jeans that have an out-seam that is slightly forward from center (center being the outer side of your leg in this case). This means you can see the side seams when looking straight-on at the jeans, and this will give the illusion of smaller thighs. Jeans which fit neither too loose or too tight also are best for creating a balanced look. Try a boot-cut with a slight flare which breaks nicely from the knee straight down to the floor (this will also give better balance to your legs). True Religion is just one brand that brings their out-seams forward, and there are many brand options as far as finding a nice flared boot-cut (most all of them).

•Rise: very applicable to this particular area, it is dependent on other issues. Check your other areas of concern on this list to see what may be best for you. However, a very high rise will not be flattering because it can appear unbalanced.

•Wash: Medium to dark denim will help bring more illusion of proportion than will light.

•Stretch or Rigid?: Jeans with stretch will be far more comfortable than rigid, because rigid can tend to squeeze muscular areas and be too loose in smaller areas. A nice balance such as 98% cotton, 2% stretch is best (too much stretch is unflattering, unbalancing and non-supportive).

The ‘Ghetto-Booty’

In other words, the well-rounded rear. Typically you want to accentuate this feature nicely, neither playing it up or down too much. This can be difficult, because many jeans have a small hip-to-waist ratio. This means that you can either find jeans that fit nice and snug on your waist, but it balloons out on your hips and thighs, or you can find jeans that fit nicely around your hips and rear, but gapes at your waist.

•Pockets: Simple pockets are more flattering than pockets which are heavily detailed or have bulky flaps, which only add more volume. Make sure they are well centered and avoid large and tiny pockets- in other words, an average size pocket will be best. Pockets with a slight angle can give you more boost if you want some. Be sure when you are getting a pair of trousers, that the pockets are centered and not too high up on the back, this is much more flattering (otherwise it will look disproportionate and a little like your rear is sagging unless you have a very perky rear).

•Cut: Contoured waistbands and jeans with a mid-rise (around 7-8.5ish inches) are very flattering because their hip-to-waist ratio is much better. Jeans that have a slightly flared boot-cut are very flattering, as are wide-leg/trouser cut jeans. Both cuts will create a nice line from the hip to the floor, and bring more balance to your rear and legs.

•Rise: Again, a higher rise back and a lower rise front will be your best friend. Most jeans have this, but some accentuate it (Grass Jeans make an amazing contour-waist jean). Avoid very high rises which will make your rear seem to grow even more in size.

•Wash:Unless you are trying to play-up your roundness, avoid jeans with excess fading in the seat area especially. If you are looking to appear slimmer, dark washes will flatter you best.

•Stretch or Rigid?: Both can be very flattering, be sure that the hip to waist ratio is constructed well if the jeans are rigid, otherwise it will flatten/squeeze your rear or bag out on your rear.

Lack of Back

There are some ethnicities that have more trouble with this than others. If you have a very small or very flat (or both) rear-end, here are some tips for you to perk-up, give some body and bring some ‘sexy back’ to your back side!

•Pockets: Never underestimate flap or embellished pockets. These add bulk with their extra material and/or detailing, giving the illusion of some ‘junk in the trunk’. It is also important to AVOID jeans that don’t have a yoke. This is the v-shaped-line in between the waistband and the pockets. Having this added line helps to create an illusion of a perkier and larger backside. Slightly smaller-than-usual pockets are great for tricking the eye to see a larger rear as well. Also, pockets placed higher help give a nice lifting effect. However, be careful with these two pocket rules, because pockets that end above the actual line of your butt, can give the appearance that it sags, and very small pockets are just not flattering on anyone since they lack a balanced proportion. My alternative suggestion would be to find average-to-small back pockets which have a slight diagonal slant (which points UP and INWARDS on the bottom of the pocket, this creates a very nice boost). Lastly, avoid pocket-less jeans, this should be a no-brainer at this point. If you want to wear a trouser, find one with nicely centered trouser pockets and/or atleast a yoke in the back to give you more volume in the back. . James Jeans, Brown Label, AG and Goldsign have phenomenal pockets for this. Citizens will definitely help widen the appearance of a tiny back as well, since their pockets are very widely spaced apart. Rock and Republic make a nicely balanced smaller and higher than average pocket as well.

•Cut: AVOID loose cuts, which will make your rear completely disappear. Stretch will really be your friend. General cut of the jean depends on other matters and is not applicable to this area. Straight legs CAN add shape (you will appear to have more hip and rear), but I really only recommend this cut if you have petite or average size hips, and your shoulders are not wider than your hips, otherwise these can be very unbalancing to the body.

•Rise: Not very applicable to this particular area, it is dependent on other issues. However, a very high rise will not be flattering because it is not able to boost a rear as well as medium and lower rises can.

•Wash: A rear that is slightly faded, with darker thighs and legs below, will give you a very nice boost and added body

•Stretch or Rigid?: Generally I would highly recommend stretch in this particular case, because rigid jeans, by the end of the day, melt off your rear and lose any shape they were helping to give you.

Wide/Large Hips

Whether you have a defined waist or not, generally there is one major rule of thumb that applies here. Avoid horizontal lines of any kind. This will only serve to make your hips appear wider and larger (as well as your rear).

•Pockets: This means avoiding pockets that are spaced widely apart (which gives the illusion of wider hips), and also pockets spaced too closely together (which will add blank space/additional hip space on each end). Basically, find a pocket that is well-centered, and moderately sized (avoid small pockets and very large pockets). I would go so far as to say to avoid the brand Citizens of Humanity because of their extra-wide pockets, unless you are looking for even more width.

•Cut: Stick with a slightly flared boot-cut jean or a nice wide leg/trouser cut that fits snuggly at the rear and thigh, and has a sleek, straight line from the thigh to the floor. This will balance the legs to appear more proportionate to the size of your hips. Straight or skinny leg jeans will create an icecream cone effect, and make you appear heavy and off balance.

•Rise: Try to stay with a medium to low rise, high rises will only increase the size of hips because the waist will appear so much smaller in proportion.

•Wash: Avoid heavy whiskering and fading in the general hip and thigh area, as well as butt area, whether your butt itself is large or not (this too, will just add to the wideness). Dark washes are very nice for additional thinning in appearance (just remember to avoid heavy fading or whiskering).

•Stretch or Rigid?: Both are very flattering for this area, check your other areas of concern on this list to see what may be best for you.

Accenting your Genes

Not all of us have the body of a supermodel. In fact, to be exact, only 2% of the population has the genetics to pass as one. When we end up in a boutique or high-end department store, expecting a $200 pair of jeans to transform us into a supermodel, many times we can be less than impressed. And we still end up buying them, and squeezing into jeans that don't quite suit our every curve or lack there of. However, thankfully some designers have come to realize that one jean does not look good on every woman or man out there.

This is where cut, style and fit come into play (and some brands excel in this area far more than others). For example, lets take Citizens of Humanity. They make many styles (flare, bootcut, trouser), but they stick to a standard fit more or less. On the other hand, Joe's jeans have a wide array of fits that are tailored to suit certain body types. This can be very beneficial IF you have a certain body type that fits one of their cuts well, however, you won't be able to cross-over into their other 'styles' quite as much (because they are MUCH more fit-specific instead of branching over a wide range of body types).

I can just imagine the CEO's of the companies thinking to themselves 'Well, do we want to make a jean that fits average that will fit most people averagely, so tons of people can buy it? Or do we want to make a jean for each body type that only fits that body perfectly?' This is a major dilemma in the fashion industry, and working towards bridging the gap between those two problems is a never-ending struggle.

Basically, unless the jean is made out of 100% spandex, it is just not ever going to fit EVERYONE out there.

But, there are some helpful tips you can learn (and many helpful sites) so that you can be an expert in deciding for yourself what will suit your body type best amongst the world of jeans. My following blogs this week will show-case each body type(with flattering cuts for them) and brands that fit them best!

Ever notice how far ahead fashion seasons are from real seasons? Spring clothes are put on display in stores now in february, fall clothes in July... even when you go to the grocery store you can find the Christmas isle cleared out and Valentines stuff being stocked at the end of December. The world of marketing and fashion moves fast, and is wayyyy ahead of everyone else. There are fashion design teams that are already choosing what colors and textures will be 'in' for years (not months) into the future. Crazy huh?

The answer is probably not...not yet at least. Denim of Virtue is a delightful new brand that was launched just this year, and it is already struggling to keep the few high end stores in LA, NY and Miami in stock.

What's so great about this new-comer in the world of designer denim? For starts, it is created by Tadd Zarubica, who is the CEO of Hudson Jeans and Yanuk Jeans. With a world of background and knowledge in the industry, and a deep passion for all things denim, came Denim of Virtue- the result of his desire to create a jean that delivers simplicity, functionality and style.

Denim of Virtue is a brand that is to the point. There are no sparkles or intricate embroideries. As Tadd feels "those are a fad and no one wants to stock up on those". His jeans deliver a sexy appeal that can be used for all occasions, dressy or casual, work or play. The details are amazing, but nicely understated. Each jean, depending on the wash, also gets a coordinating set of thread colors (instead of the same color on every jean, no matter what). That in itself makes it extensively more difficult to manufacture, and a bragging point on the detailing and thought they put into it. The fabrics are imported from the best factories in Italy, Japan, and the U.S. to give each piece its best performance and beauty possible.

Tadd also wanted to address some problem areas in the jean industry, including washes that are too 'flat' too 'faddish' and too 'loose'. He made sure his jeans are woven into beautiful washes with a lot of dimension. The washes are also very classic, with a touch of rugged vintage appeal, minus the heavy destruction (for a more clean cut, timeless look). Better yet, the fabric also has a wonderful 'bounce-back' ability. In other words, it holds it shape very well so that you can avoid the problem of, as Tadd puts it, 'at the end of the day there's a whole lot of jean and not a lot of butt'.

The cut of the jean is also more versatile. The back rises higher than the front, ensuring that there's no peep-shows when you sit down. The bootcut also breaks lower, and slimmer, giving shorter people a better illusion of height (even if you cut off 5 inches when hemming it). There are low rise, high rise, straight, skinny, flare, and wideleg among the many options to choose from (and within those, all the beautiful washes to choose from).

This brand was truly created with a lot in mind for the customer. Form over function always seems to be the way in the fashion world, but these designer jeans contend to be both functional and packed full of beauty and sex appeal. This is what we all want (and need) to know how to do. There is nothing worse than spending money and getting excited about a pair of jeans you found online, and when you open up the package, find that they are fake. Argh.

There are many places online that offer tid bits of tutorials, pictures here and there...never quite the whole condensed encyclopedia of fake vs. real information you were hoping for though.

This is one site worth noting. It is incredibly simple and works beautifully.

When I try to find out why someone's feedback is bad, it can take awhile, especially when my computer is feeling like being slow. It starts out simply enough...I just want to see what people have written for their negatives. Page 1, nothing, Page 2 nothing, Page 3, ahah! There's one! Page 4, nothing again. It can take awhile to find all the negatives and neutrals to see exactly what is bad (or not) about the seller.

ToolHaus does all the work for you. Simply type in the eBay username of the person in question, and they show you all the negatives and neutrals they've received. Perfect. Easy.

Deals of the Day explained

Some tips and rules-of-thumb for my deals of the day.

1) First off, they are just my personal daily findings of discount designer denim as I browse through eBay. Unfortunately I will probably miss quite a few good deals, but I try to find most of them!

2) Secondly, it's hard to find all the brands every day, so I focus on a few each day.

3) They are all BIN's. This means I never include listings that are auction style, since these last only 7 days, and you never know how high in $$ they can go (so I can't really justify calling them deals when I don't know what the final price will be).

4) Not all the jeans are going to be in brand spanking new condition. Some will be brand new, others will have wears and tears. Often times people forget what great capris can be made from destroyed pants, etc, so it's all fair game! :)

5) There may be some days where there are no deals (wHaT?!? I know, I know, but somedays it is just that way). Try to hang in there, there will always be many deals to choose from each week!

6) Most often the deals I find are going to be very cheap (the 'incredible' deals so to speak). Once jeans get around $60+ I no longer consider them 'amazing, incredible, unbelievable' deals, unless its a rare pair of jeans. This is because most jeans get bid up to around $60 to $90, depending on the brand (unless its a highly coveted or rare pair). I will occasionally post more pricey jeans though if I think its a good find :)

7) Lastly, any of these postings can be good for only 1 day or as long as 30 days, depending on how long the person has listed the jeans. Sooo, any of my blogs up to 30 days are fair game, though your best bet is always the current weeks blogs (not just the current day, but the whole week). :)

Seven for All Mankind Basics

You can never have too many choices. Atleast that's how 7 for all Mankind feels when it comes to fit. There is the A-pocket, the signature, the dojo, the hefner, the flynt, the flare, the boycut, the mojo, the trouser, and then a few miscellaneous ones here and there from time to time. How do each of these fit though??

Signature bootcut fit: This is their primary jean, as the majority of stores (and buyers) have these. They have the 'squiggle' (otherwise just known as their signature wavy line across the back). They are bootcut and have a lower rise than most of the other styles below (but not dangerously low). These fit most people very well. Overall fit is basic and snug.

Signature flare fit: Same rules apply as above, but it has a slight flare at the leg opening (by just 1" more than the bootcut).

A-pocket fit: the waist is still relatively low, but a pinch higher than the bootcut (mostly in the back for a more contoured waist),and it's tighter in the knee, with more of a flare at the base.

Dojo fit: These are the wide leg cut. With 2" more at the base than the bootcut, these are quite roomy from the knee down and have a very casual look with flip flops and a very classy (think trouser) look with heels. They remain tight from the thighs up, with a very booty-lifting effect for most people.

Flynt fit: More of a contoured waistband (like the a-pockets) and a pinch higher of a rise (but still not actually 'high'), with trimmer thighs and a small bootcut for the leg. These tend to fit a tad tighter than the signature bootcut.

Boycut fit: This has abutton instead of zip fly, and is higher in rise (by 1")than the other fits, and a tad looser as well.

Miscellaneous fits: This includes Jagger, Kate, Heffner, Mia, Miller (trouser), Rocker, Roxy, Colette, straight, crop, Flo Jo and the occasional odd one out. To be added later.

Pick a Pocket

The other day I was lazily flipping through the current Fitness magazine, and low and behold, they had a whole section on jeans and their pockets. Jeans seem to be in magazines a lot these days. "Find your perfect fit" it always screams out at you from the shelves. Well, easier said then done. In the Fitness magazine it also had a suggestion that if you don't have the time to actually work out and shape your derriere, then 'fake it' by minimizing the size of your rear with jeans that have longer, lower pockets. OR, boost it up (if your flat) with higher, smaller pockets.

This is actually good advise.

The rule of thumb with pockets is exactly that, however there are many other things you should know before deciding on some jeans that will have the perfect pocket placement for you.

Placement is key...I know, on the back right? It's a little more complex than that. They can be wide apart, close together, high on your rear or lower, entering the 'leg zone'. Also, the size DOES matter. Small pockets will typically be very unflattering for those that have a shapely rear, but will have a nice boosting effect (and be the perfect size) for those with a small, flat rear. Big pockets actually will minimize the size, whereas small pockets will give the illusion of a larger rear. The lower the pockets, the more your rear will appear to be higher, and thus, more lifted and toned and shaped in appearance. Also, when they are wider apart, they can cover that 'extra' hip area for those who have wide hips, and give the illusion of more proportion. The more close together the pockets, the more wide your hips will look. If you are not sure which is best for you, go with something in the middle, which always looks nice.

Then there are pockets that are tilted or with obscure shapes, like James, Brown label, Goldsign and AG among some. The shape and/or tilt also helps give the illusion that you are more toned than you actually are. Great, huh? The shape and tilt of the pocket will actually look like your rear is lifted upwards, rather than really realizing its just a shaped pocket. This is why designer jeans can be so nice.

It really is all about the pocket placement.

No one wants to see the front of a pair of jeans when deciding whether to get them. We turn them right around, and stare at the butt area. Because the key to designer jeans is not only having thinner looking thighs, longer legs, trimmer hips and a flatter belly, but most importantly having a fabulous rear view.

This is one of my favorite brands for many reasons. If you are going for a more classic, simplistic, but still sleek and sexy look, these are your jeans. Her washes are nothing but the basics- a few classic light washes, a couple mediums, and some beautiful simple dark washes. No frills.

The pocket design is also classic, simple and chic. Her use of fading (thigh, hip and leg creases/fades) is very subtle and more natural looking than those of 7FAM or Rock and Republic. She specializes particularly in fit- with options for how high you want the waist or how wide you like your legs. The pockets are perfectly placed to give you a real 'boost' (they are neither too high or too low for most women and men). I will talk more about pocket placement another day though. She also occasionally adds a faint line down the leg to help elongate and give the illusion of height to the legs. She also has a less expensive line called 'City of Angels by Paige'.

Paige herself has an interesting history of being a model, then a fit model for designer jean brands (such as Joe's and 7 for all Mankind among others). She retired from that business and created her own brand, so you can understand that her passion is fueled by her past experience in the business of endless searching to create the 'perfect fit'. These were deemed the best fitting jean by Allure magazine when they debuted. Although these don't work for every one, they can be stunning for those that they do work for! Definitely a jean worth checking out for that staple, no-nonsense pair for your closet. :)

True Religion is one of my new obsessions. I used to find them unappealing, but now I am learning to appreciate some unique aspects of this brand. For one, they make some of the best washes on the market in my opinion. They are your absolute true blue vintage colors with a hint of pizazz. If you want a beaufitul dark pair of jeans, look no further. They have really got those down. Their dark washes seem to have a 'depth' too them, creating a deep and soulful vibe, with outstanding hues to choose from. Some of the prettiest with most depth, in my own opinion, are the 'dark urban cowboy', 'the boss', 'the duke', 'dark drifter', 'dark vintage', 'lone star' and 'dark pony express'. These have exceptional depth with outstanding color. It's actually difficult to state the best, since almost all of them are top-notch.

'Whiskey creek' is also exceptional at still providing some depth for a jean that is more on the grey/black side than blue. However, I am basically a fan of all their washes, because sometimes you want a more casual jean which typically means it has a 'flatter' and less dark wash. Their light washes lean towards having a lot of blue undertones to them, making them very 'baby blue' in appearance (such as 'easy rider') but still with more depth than some other brands.

As you may already know if you read my blog on measuring, I love the Caribbean wash by Seven For all Mankind. I have a weak spot for jeans that have green undertones for some reason. These jeans have just an ever-so-slight turquoise hue because of their slight green tint underneath the medium-dark navy wash. One new pair I think is absolutely beautiful for this fall is the signature Argyle bootcut in the Caribbean wash. Just stunning.

Judy 'n Jacob seems to be the first to carry this on eBay...they just sold their only pair as I wrote this, haha, so be sure to bookmark this blog and come back to click here to see if they have more soon, which I'm sure they will.

Fall fashion is always exciting, even for those not so into fashion. It's that time of year when summer is winding down and days are filled with a crisp breeze. Something in the air seems to stir us all into a a new state of mind, the time of harvest, the time of 'back to school', the time of raking leaves and kicking a ball around in the park. The time to dig into the back of your closet and pull out the dark jeans and sweaters. With it comes the overload of new clothes in the stores. Summer and winter fashion have their moments, but it always seems to be spring and fall that are the long-awaited premiers for what colors and trends will be in.

Flipping through a Glamour magazine, it states that fall will be such things as plaid, wide legs, fitted tops and dresses with flared edges (that babydoll look), substantial accessories (dark, black, thick, large), much more patterns (floral prints, etc.) and a bit of the 80's will reappear with large sweaters over tight leggings, which are still hanging in there in the fashion world.

What else? Organic is growing in strength everywhere you look. From food to household items to jeans now. One interesting up and coming brand is Tierra del Forte, which makes their jeans from all organic cotton. You can view a video of it on my blog as well :).

I am partial to certain jean brands. I guess it's only natural. I hope to continually grow my knowledge in other brands though, so that what I know can be more well rounded and more helpful in the long-run. So for now, I will say that I definitely know more concerning 7 For All Mankind, as well as Citizens for Humanity, Paige, True Religion and Rock & Republic as well as a few more obscure brands ( Joe's, Grass, 575, Hudson, Antik, Paper Denim and Cloth, Habitual, Brown Label, 1921, Meli Melo, etc).

So what about measuring? Do jeans really have to be this complicated? Well... when you are paying $200 plus for that perfect fit, you better believe it! Or atleast, let's just say, it's worth your time and money to understand how to measure your own jeans and decipher other measurements.

I want to make a video of this soon, but for now I will do my best to describe how to go about measuring and reading measurements through some definitions and images (with my 7 for all Mankind Flynt Caribbean jeans serving as the model)! :)

The rules and definitions of measuring:

Waist: This seems to be the most confused of all measurements because there are multiple ways to go about this. There is the aligned version, unaligned version, doubling of those versions, and the 'wrap around' version. Unaligned is the most common, least confusing, and thus the most accurate version. However, having both aligned and unaligned is the MOST accurate of all.
Aligned is when you pull up all edges of the waist so that they are 'aligned', and measure straight across. This will be a larger number than the unaligned measurement.

Unaligned is when you simply measure straight across the top of the waist (basically the inner side of the back waist band). This will be an inch or so less than the aligned number.

Doubling is when people take the aligned or unaligned measurement and 'double' it (14x2=28) and give that as the waist measurement. This is not really preferable, but many do this.
The 'wrap around', for lack of better words...is simply trying to wrap your tape measurer around the entire waist to measure it. This method is difficult and not suggested or commonly used.

Hips: Hips are typically measured at the base of the zipper (where the visual end of the zipper is on the outside, ie, seams and stitches wrapping around the zipper area). Also it can be roughly considered 3" from the crotch, but most typically it is just taken from the zipper base. From the zipper base, you measure straight across from fabric end to fabric end. NOT seam to seam, unless you specifically note that, because this will take off an inch or two. Just go all the way to the edge of the jean, regardless of where the front and back fabric join on the side seams.

Rise: The rise is the least confusing. Simply measure from crotch (where all leg stitching meets) to the top (the front side of the waistband). Back rise is the same.

Thigh: This is taken from the crotch to the outer edge of the leg. It can also be taken midway between this area and the knee for yet another number if needed, but not necessary.

Knee: This is semi-tricky because you will have to gadge it for yourself. This is the thinnest point in the leg. Roughly midway, but that can vary depending on whethere the jean has been shortened from tailoring/hemming or not.

Leg Opening: This is either done straight across the bottom of the leg, wrapped around the bottom of the leg, or straight across and doubled. So in some instances you may see a measurement of 9", in other instances, 18" when its doubled or wrapped.

Inseam: This is taken simply from the crotch to the end of the leg. There is some discrepency on where the exact middle of the crotch is, since its slightly off center, but unless you are buying a pair that will be too short if its .2" inches off, this is not a concern.

These descriptions are how measurements are standardly taken. And these are usually how most companies and individual sellers (eBay, forums, etc) measure as well.

You walk into a jean boutique and pick up a pair of some beautiful 7 for all Mankind Flynt caribbean jeans (shhh, one of my favorite colors). Size 25 it reads. WHAT?? Then you realize, you are not in Kansas anymore. This is the confusing european sizing that most designer brands use. Why do they do this? Well, most high fashion has its roots in europe. The finest denim fabric currently comes from Europe and Japan. So how do you decipher the european sizing? It works as follows:
00=24
0=25
2=26
4=27
6=28
8=29
10=30
11/12=32

Now for some reason, it is much less complicated for men, because most jeans are sized this way already, regardless of being designer or not. Go figure.

Who to trust on eBay?

Trust? On eBay? Many of my friends are still too leary to even try that yet. eBay demands a lot of trust from both the buyer and seller, but it can work beautifully, and my closet of clothes and house of stuff that is mostly from eBay is proof. So maybe you've bid a million times like me, or maybe you haven't tried it at all yet. It is a very safe way to buy stuff, but you gotta know who to buy from, and a little research towards that will really pay off.

Typically, anything that is from Hong Kong or Singapore is generally a knock-off. There are exceptions, since as we all know, many things are made and imported from those countries (like Abercrombie). Also if you want to play it extra safe, I have found that in some rare cases, fake jeans are also found more often in California than in other states. There are many reasons for this: it is a huge state, it is the denim capital of the world, many things are imported there, etc.

So who can you be safe trusting? Usually it is someone selling from their own closet collection (ie, 'spring cleaning'). They typically have good feedback, and a nice amount of information on the auction like style and wash #, measurements, and the like. I will go more into this on another day.

Who are the big time sellers to trust? There are two main sellers that I have found to be authentic. Dailydenim and Judynjacob. They always have an enormous amount of jeans, all authentic. Most assume that they own a boutique and sell their overstock on eBay, since it is very difficult to get your hands on that many authentic jeans, due to high restrictions from the designer brands. At some point I would love to own a boutique of my own and do as they do, but for now I just occasionally sell some here and there that I find on sale.

Finding deals on eBay can be tricky...

Sometimes buyers can get too wrapped up in bidding to realize they are no longer getting a good deal...
This is a very good example of being smart with eBay shopping and always checking your options.
Both pairs I have for an example are basically brand new jeans by 7 for all Mankind in their beautiful new (and highly coveted) Nakita wash. Both are a size 28, and both are on eBay at the same time, yet one is going for $80 tops, and the other for$140+ ...

While I'm here, I'll say a little about the Nakita wash as well. This is a real staple wash for the summer, and it is so comfortable as well. This is a very, very buttery soft wash. It is a beautiful steel medium blue color with tan and gray undertones that sets off the fabric in a very subtle and casual way. It is extremely similar to the havana wash, but less 'grainy', and more smooth in appearance (and more smooth to the touch too). The wash is stretchy (the more soft, the more stretchy typically) and tends to run true to size to one size large. For example, a size 30 may be able to buy a 29 in this wash. It is an extremely popular wash that is relatively new, and flies off the shelves very fast. You can bet that most lovers of the 7fam brand already have this jean in one or more cuts (bootcut, dojo) in their wardrobe!

So here I am, ready to begin this blog, and I am not even wearing jeans...I suppose that's not too proper for the occassion, but here goes nothing anyway.

If you read the side notes on my blog, you probably already have a picture in mind that I am a jean freak, and yes, that is what I am. It all began a few years ago when I found an amazing pair of jeans at a used clothing store. Needless to say, they were cheap, but I also had no idea what they were. When I paid for them, the woman said I had found a great deal and that Hilary Duff wore them. Ok, I thought, that's nice, and went about my way. Then I found a tiny article in a magazine claimed that Paige jeans were their 'find' for the 'best-fitting' of all jeans. This sparked my curiousity. After some googling around, I discovered my used jeans I had just bought (Paper Denim and Cloth) were worth almost $200. My jaw dropped...I couldn't believe jeans could be that much. My curiousity still rising, I then researched Paige and decided I would try a pair for myself if I ever found them cheap (because you will soon learn I am a bargain hunter and very cheap). Being the avid eBayer that I am, I immediately logged on, and did a search for Paige jeans, and eventually bought a pair. Ever since then, I have been hooked.

It is funny sometimes for me to think of myself as someone interested in designer jeans, because I am not interested in being 'stylish'. I know, you are thinking that really is a lie, or some bizarre oxymoron, but it's true. I am in fact just fascinated with denim. I can go to Nordstrom or some little boutique and just look at them and be content, strange, I know. It has led to me having a growing knowledge (and closet, shhh) over many brands of designer jeans, washes, how they are cut to fit in just such a way, and how to spot fakes, what pocket-placement means and why it matters, among many other things.

There is such a wealth of information out on the web, but in my opinion it is scattered and vague. I hope the Denim Cafe will become a place where the pieces of the puzzle are assembled under one roof. In the midst of that, I also want to post daily finds of authentic jeans on eBay, so that I can be of some help in finding authentic, stunning deals (because who wants to actually dish out $180 instead of $60?). I will also focus on featuring certain facts about jeans and brands each day. So now that this has become a novel, and rather too long for a blog, I will leave it at that for today.
